Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Diatoma is Diatoma vulgaris Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Diatoma moniliformis subsp. ovalis (F.Fricke) Lange-Bertalot, Rumrich & G.Hofmann.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).
