The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pinnularia petersenii Krammer & Lange-Bertalot.

Adjective (Latin), little, small, puny (Stearn 1973).
