Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Staurosirella lapponica (Grunow) D.M.Williams & Round.

Type locality: [No type locality given] Lectotype from Bergquara, Sweden; (Van Heurck 1881: pl. XLV: fig 35) Lectotype (designated in Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1991, legend to plate 135): W; W0164826 Grunow smaple 2234 (Krammer & Langer-Bertalot 2004: legend to plate 135) Notes: "Epitype (designated here for the above lectotype of F. lapponica Grunow): BR-4713, SEM stub made from Grunow sample 1477 (Erde von Sodankylä, Finland) (Meise Botanic Garden, BR). The epitype is represented by Fig. 30" (Van de Vijver & al. 2022: 37).

Adjective (Latin), with leaflets arranged on each side of a common petiole.
