The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia foetidissima Cocks ex Bornet

John et al. (2004) note that “the number of pericentrals found in the material that is recorded here (6) does not conform to the 7 or 8 given in the original description.”
This is a marine species.
Type locality: Beaufort, Carteret County, North Carolina, USA (Mamoozadeh & Freshwater 2011: 281). Holotype: H.L. Blomquist; 1940; MICH, herb of W.R. Taylor (Diaz-Tapia et al. 2013: 356: fig. 43).
