Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Homotypic Synonym(s)
Zonaria bartayresiana (Lamouroux) C.Agardh 1817
Ulva bartayresiana (Lamouroux) Martius 1833

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Dictyota bartayresii J.V.Lamouroux 1809
Dictyota patens J.Agardh 1882

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al., (1996) the name Dictyota friabilis has been misapplied to this species by Sigee (1966: 71) and Tsuda & Newhouse (1966: 97). See also Wynne (1998). South & Skelton (2003) and John et al. (2004) cite Dictyota patens J. Agardh 1882 as a synonym of this species. According to De Clerck (2003), the species incorrectly called D. bartayresiana by Vickers has been shown by De Clerck & Coppejans (1997) to be referable to D. crispata Lamouroux.

Distributional notes
South & Skelton (2003) note that Fijian records of Dictyota require a thorough revision comparable with that made for Indian Ocean species by de Clerck (1999).

Widespread in most warm seas (Lipkin & Silva 2002). - (15 Jun 2010) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Description
De Clerck (2003) notes that De Clerck & Coppejans (1997b: 414-415) showed after verification of the type specimen that D. bartayresiana contains no surface proliferations or involucrate sporangia thus agreeing with Kützing (1859: 8. pl. 16, fig. 1) and Taylor (1960: 219, pl. 30, fig.2) and contrary to Vickers (1908: 38, pl. 12-13) an Jaasund (1970: 72, fig. 1D, 2C).

Type information
Type locality: Antilles, West Indies (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 586). Lectotype: CN C7F99 (De Clerck 2003: 163). Notes: De Clerck & Coppejans (1997b: 414-415) showed after verification of the type specimen that D. bartayresiana contains no surface proliferations or involucrate sporangia thus agreeing with Kützing (1859: 8, pl. 16, fig.1) and Taylor (1960: 219, pl. 30, fig.2) and contrary to Vickers (1908: 38, pl. 12-13)and Jaasund (1970: 72, fig. 1D, 2C). The species incorrectly called D. bartayresiana by Vickers has been shown by De Clerck & Coppejans to be referable to D. crispata Lamouroux. De Clerck, in Skelton & South (2004: 295), suggests that the type locality is Haiti.
