The type species (holotype) of the genus Ahnfeltiopsis is Ahnfeltiopsis linearis (C.Agardh) P.C.Silva & DeCew.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
Gymnogongrus fastigiatus Harvey 1860
Gymnogongrus fastigiatus Harvey 1860 is illegitimate (a later homonym of Gymnogongrus fastiatus (Endliche) Ruprecht 1850) and cannot serve as a basionym; therefore a new name is proposed ( Womersley 1964: 265). - (30 Jun 2009) - Wendy Guiry
