The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramium gaditanum (Clemente) Cremades.

Type locality: Ad Gades leg. Willkomm, ad Neapolin: Naegeli (317); (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: Willkomm (from Cadiz); L; Herb. Lugd. Bat. 940.142.444 (Dixon 1959: 341) Notes: According to Dixon (1959: 341), C. spiniferum is based on specimens from England and the Atlantic coast of Spain and not on material from the Mediterranean.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), spine-bearing (Stearn 1973).
