The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterosiphonia is Pterosiphonia cloiophylla (C.Agardh) Falkenberg.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Symphyocladia tanakae (Uwai & Masuda) Savoie & G.W.Saunders

Taxonomic notes
This species was introduced accidentally, probably via oysters from Japan, into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 217), being first found in the Etang de Thau (France) in 1993. - (5 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry
