Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Gymnogongrus crenulatus (Turner) J.Agardh

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), crenulate, having small rounded teeth (Stearn 1973).
