The type species (holotype) of the genus Hypophyllum is Hypophyllum middendorfii (Ruprecht) Kylin.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mikamiella dentata (M.J.Wynne) M.J.Wynne.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), toothed, usually with sharp teeth pointing outwards (Stearn 1973).
