This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ulvella scutata (Reinke) R.Nielsen, C.J.O'Kelly & B.Wysor.

Type locality: Kieler Bucht, Baltic Sea; (Silva & al. 1996: 725) Lectotype: Original illustration (Reinke, 1889, pl. 25: fig. 1): (Brodie & al. 2007: 124) Notes: Lectotype selected by Burrows (1991: 122). Epitype (designated by Nielsen et al., 2013: 52): C: CAT 2455 (dried material of isolate RN020273). On Polysiphonia (INA).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), shield-shaped (Stearn 1973).
