This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cladophora prolifera (Roth) Kützing.

Type locality: "in mare Corsicam"; (Roth 1797: 183) Neotype [Trieste, Adriatic Sea; designated Hoek 1963: 208]: L; 937.264.23 (Hoek 1963: 208) Notes: The type is seemingly lost (Womersley 1984).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), producing offsets, bearing progeny as offshoots (Stearn 1973).
