Description
Colony ovoid or spherical, composed of 32 or 64 biflagellate cells, measuring up to 175 microns long. Thirty-two- or 64-celled colony containing eight to 12 or 18-20 small somatic cells in the anterior portion of colony. Gradual increase in cell size fom anterior to posterior pole absent. Somatic cells nearly spherical, having a cup-shaped chloroplast with a single pyrenoid, measuring up to 13 microns in diameter. Reproductive cells nearly spherical, having a cup-shaped chloroplast with five to eight pyrenoids in the mature cell, measuring up to 21 microns in diameter. Individual cellular sheaths nearly spherical, loosely arranged in gelatinous matix of colony. Asexual reproducton by autocolony formation; each reroductive cell forming a daugher colony after inversion. Sexual reproduction anisogamous with bundles of male gametes. Mature zygotes spherical, measuring 19-28 micons in diameter. Zygote walls smooth.
