Description
Plants usually up to 3.5 (-5.0) cm tall; axes lanceolate to ligulate, flattened, 0.7-1.8 mm wide, 100-160 microns thick, sometimes very narrow in flattened parts (~0.3 mm) and terete distally, or compressed to terete throughout; branching irregular, alternate or pinnate, up to three orders; branches 0.1-3.0 mm apart, 80-700 microns wide, up to 35 mm long, linear to lanceolate, usually basally constricted; axes and branches become narrow and terete (~80-180 microns in diameter) distally when contact with substratum is made; apices obtuse to acute, apical cell protuberant; holdfast stoloniferous producing peg-like attachment haptera consisting of a bundle of rhizoidal filaments and a single layer of basal cortiction present at maturity. In transverse section, outer cortical cells anticlinally elongated to angular, 7.0-10.5 x 4.5-6.0 microns with mean length/width ratio of 1.6; inner cortical cells angular, 7.5-24.5 x 5.5-16.5 microns with mean length/width ratio of 1.4; rhizines 5.0-8.5 microns in diameter, abundant in the medulla; medullary filaments 11.5-26.0 microns in diameter. Cystocarps produced subterminally, tetrasporangial sori terminally, on axes and ultimate branches; cystocarps unilocular, placental core centrally positioned throughout cystocarp development, carposporangia produced on all sides of placental core, pericarp elevated on one side of blade, sometimes on both sides though one side always more than the other, ostiole lacking a peristome; tetraporangial sori lack sterile margins , tetrasporangia cruciate; gametophytic plants monoecious, spermatangial sori occurring on pericarp.
