The type species (holotype) of the genus Prionitis is Prionitis ligulata J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prionitis sternbergii (C.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Type locality: Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada; (Gabrielson 2008: 91) Lectotype: D. Lyall; TCD; Unnumbered (labeled var. normalis (Gabrielson 2008: 89, 91, 95) Notes: The specimen labeled var. normalis (invalidly published and replaced by P. lyallii var. lyalii) is selected as the lectotype of P. lyallii by Gabrielson (2008).
