The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondracanthus acicularis (Roth) Fredericq.

Type locality: Adriatic Sea: "In variis submarinis corporibus"; Lectotype: Wulfen’'s (1803: 63) description in the absence of material (epitype) (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 237)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), acicular, i.e., narrow, stiff, pointed like a needle (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Epilithic, lower littoral and upper sublittoral in shelter and areas with some exposure to wave action; tolerant of sand cover; sometimes forming a dense turf (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 238).
