The type species (holotype) of the genus Anabaena is Anabaena oscillarioides Bory ex Bornet & Flahault .
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sphaerospermopsis torquesreginae (Komárek) Werner, Laughinghouse IV, Fiore & Sant'Anna.

Type locality: "Locus classicus: In stagnis eutrophicis prope Boca de Laguna del Tesoro in Península Zapata, Provincia Matanzas, Cuba."; (Komárek 1984: 14) Type ("lconotypus: figura nostra 10."): Komárek; 2.xi.1980; (Komárek 1984: 14) Notes: Originally described from planktonic populations of Cuban eutrophic environments (Werner et al. 2012).
