Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Exilaria is Exilaria flabellata Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Meridion circulare (Greville) C.Agardh.

Type locality: Rivulet near Dumbryden Quarries ; (Rhode, Pappas & Stoermer 2001: 178) Holotype: BM; 81187 (Rhode, Pappas & Stoermer 2001: 178) Notes: Freshwater, Scotland (Index Nominum Algarum). Rhode et al. cite 1820 (presumably collection date).
