Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Prototheca is Prototheca zopfii W.Krüger.

Status of Name
The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.

Description
After 4 days incubation on Sabouraud dextrose agar at 37°C, colonies are white to cream, smooth, convex and have a mean diameter of 2 mm. Texture of colonies is soft and viscous. Form small, ovoid to globose (5–7.5 µm) sporangiospores in sporangias, with a mean diameter of 15 µm. Good growth occurs at 28 and 37°C. Glucose, galactose and fructose are assimilated, but not glycerol, sorbitol, arabinose, lactose, mannose, melobiose, rhamnose, sucrose or trehalose. Phenylalanine and proline are assimilated, but not lysine, valine or tetrazolium.
