Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithothamnion darwinii (Harvey) Areschoug.

Type Information
Type locality: King George's Sound Darwin [Western Australia]; (Harvey 1849: 109)TCD?; Notes: Wilks & Woelkerling (1991: 529) note that the type appears to be missing. The specimen from King George Sound, Western Australia, upon which Harvey (1849) based the protologue of Melobesi darwinii could not be found. The status and disposition is in doubt, but from the description it is almost certainly not a Melobesia.
