General Environment
This is a freshwater species.
Description
Plants monoecious, 3-10 cm high, not incrusted, grows in small, dense bunches. Numerous bulbilliferous nodes at the base of the plant. Branchlets 1-5 in a whorl. Gametangia both conjoined and sejoined in the same plant. Oogonia 1-3 together, 480-560 um long. Oospores 270-415 um long and antheridia 420-525 um in diameter.
The species is similar to Tolypella nidifica but differ by the number of branchlets in each whorl, the situation of the gametangia and the shorter oogonia and oospores.
Habitat
Tolypella antarctica is a freshwater species, while Tolypella nidifica is a brackishwater species. In most of the localities the species has been found in shallow water, to 40 cm depth.
In one of the localities,Lac d'Armor in soth Kerguelen, the species is found down to 3 m, where it was growing in small tufts on sand bottom. In spite of unfavorable thermic conditions, the fructification was good.
