The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Tryblionella acuta (Cleve) D.G.Mann.

Adjective A (Latin), acute, pointed; i.e. narrowing gradually and making an angle of less than 90° (Stearn 1973).
