Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pinnularia acoricola var. rostellata Krammer.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), somewhat beaked, provided with a short beak (Stearn 1973).
