The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitella is Nitella opaca (C.Agardh ex Bruzelius) C.Agardh.

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
Sterike branchlets 1-fuecate, dactyls equal in length. Fertile branchletsshort, compact, forming heads, enveloped in mucus, dactyls unequal in length, acute, sometimes bifid or cuspidate. Gametangia conjoined at branchlet nodes. Oogonia solitary, stalked, to 420um long (immature). Antheridia solitary, short stalked, 290-430um in diameter. (from Ling, Xie & Langangen 2000).
