Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Chondroclonium is Chondroclonium chamissoi (C.Agardh) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hypnea cornuta (Kützing) J.Agardh.

Type Information
Type locality: "ad oras Guineae" fide J. Agardh (1851: 449) [stated by Kützing to be unknown]; (Lipkin & Silva 2002: 21) Type: Herb. Lenormand, PC; (Lipkin & Silva 2002: 21) Notes: "Locus natalis ignotus" (Silva et al. 1996: 296). "Ad oras Guineae" according to J. Agardh (1851: 449). According to South (2004: 137), the type locality is Guinea Coast, Atlantic Ocean. Lewmanomont (1997: 180) notes that in Kützing (1849), the type citation (Gigartina cornutum Kützing) is "Gigartina cornuta Lamour-Locus natalis ignotus (v.s. in herb. Lenormand)." This specimen (in Lenormand's or Kützing's herbarium) is to be regarded as the lectotype of C. cornutum, later transferred to H. cornuta (Kützing) J. Agardh (1852).
