This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Helicodictyon planctonicum (L.A.Whitford) L.A.Whitford & G.J.Schumacher.

Type locality: USA: North Carolina; (Whitford 1956: 201) Notes: Lectotype (designated by Darienko & Pröschold 2017): Fig. 13 in Whitford (1956). Epitype (designated by Darienko & Pröschold 2017): The strain UTEX 1570 is permanently cryopreserved in a metabolically inactive state (cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen) in the UTEX, University of Texas, USA.
