This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hypnea filiformis (Harvey) Womersley.

Type locality: Garden Island, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 298) Notes: Womersley (1994: 440) gives the following data for the type: Type from Garden I., W. Aust. (Harvey, Trav. set 182); not located in TCD. [Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 312a, from the “Swan R.”, is in TCD].

Adjective (Latin), thread-like (Stearn 1973).
