Type Species
This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Stictodesmis.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Climaconeis lorenzii Grunow.

Type Information
Syntype localities: "Harvey Bay, Queensland, and at Port of France, New Caledonia"; (Greville 1863: 535) Lectotype: BM; "slide BM 2642" [New Caledonia] (Cox 1982) Notes: "A slide in the British Museum (Natural History), BM 2642 must form the lectotype. It is part of Greville's collection, labelled in his own hand and the specimen he illustrated can be located on the slide using Maltwood Finder numbers." (Cox 1982: 149).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
