The type species (lectotype) of the genus Penium is Penium margaritaceum Brébisson ex Ralfs.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Penium exiguum var. capitatum (Y.V.Roll) Kossinskaja.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), with a knob-like head or tip (Stearn 1973).
