The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gastridium is Gastridium kaliforme (Goodenough & Woodward) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Derbesia marina (Lyngbye) Solier.

Syntype localities: Hab. ad infimum refluxus limitem littoris Faroeneis, ut ad Qvivig, Hövig, etc. [various in Faroe Islands]; (Lyngbye 1819: 72)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).
