Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Batrachospermum is Batrachospermum gelatinosum (Linnaeus) De Candolle.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Kumanoa gracillima (West & G.S.West) Entwisle, M.L.Vis, W.B.Chiasson, Necchi & A.R.Sherwood

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1973).
