The type species (lectotype) of the genus Monostroma is Monostroma bullosum (Roth) Thuret.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Ulvaria fusca (Wittrock) Vinogradova

Type locality: Alaska: western Aleutian Islands (Silva 1996-to date).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
