The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Halopeltis australis (J.Agardh) G.W.Saunders

Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
