The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Crouanophycus mcnabbii (E.Y.Dawson) Athanasiadis.

Type locality: Bahía Agua Verde, Baja California Sur, Mexico; (Silva & al. 1996: 381) Type: E.Y. Dawson 18855; 20 April, 1958; scraped from rock surfaces with other minute algae from deths of about 3 feet, El Solitario rock; LAM; 500044 (Athanasiadis 1996: 199)
