Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

This is a fossil species seemingly without extant populations.

Type information
Type locality: Catalonia: St. Llorens dels Piteus; Vich (Lutétien) (Silva 1996-to date). Type: Bataller; (Silva 1996-to date Notes: Aguirre et al. (2012) were unable to locate the Catalonian material. They note that Lemoine considered that a specimen collected from Haute-Savoie probably belongs to the same species. The nomenclatural status of the name Lithothamnion faurai remains uncertain.
