Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Acanthophora muscoides (Linnaeus) Bory de Saint-Vincent

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), resembling a moss (Neal 1993).
