Description
Gametophytes decumbent, spreading to 6 cm at maturity, arising from short, simple to branched stipes on the lower surface, the stipes central to submarginal, occasional secondary stipes forming from margins or blades. Blades initially elliptical to reniform with smooth margins to 1.5 cm in diam., early on becoming highly crenate; some terminal crenations first developing as finger-like projections on margins, later elongating into flattened blades, at maturity these reaching 0.5 cm diam. and 300 µm thick, the margins mostly remaining crenate. Cortex composed of 4-5 layers of pigmented cortical cells diminishing in size from the medulla to the outer cortex, 2-5 µm diam. in surface view, connecting to a non-pigmented, intertwining, finely filamentous medulla with cells to 1.5 µm diam. and occasional large stellate ganglion cells. Gametophytes monoecious, female supporting cells bearing a 3-celled carpogonial branch and 1-many subsidiary cells. Cystocarps to 400 µm in diam., producing a tight mass of small carpospores to 3 µm. Spermatangia to 2 µm diam. in scattered irregular sori on both blade surfaces. Tetrasporophytes unknown.
