The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gomphoneis is Gomphoneis elegans (Grunow) Cleve.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gomphonella xinjiangiana (Q.M.You & Kociolek) R.Jahn & N.Abarca.
