The type species (lectotype) of the genus Haliptilon is Haliptilon cuvieri (J.V.Lamouroux) H.W.Johansen & P.C.Silva.
Type locality: Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico (Dawson 1953: 130). Holotype: Dawson; Dec. 17, 1949; On intertidal rocks. HAHF Dawson 8173, on sheet 54923 (Dawson 1953: 130).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), rose-coloured (Stearn 1973).
