Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cladophora is Cladophora oligoclona (Kützing) Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Wittrockiella lyallii (Harvey) C.Hoek, Ducker & Womersley.
Type Information
Type locality: Stewart Island, New Zealand; (Hoek, Ducker & Womersley 1984: 45) Type: TCD; (Hoek, Ducker & Womersley 1984: 45) Notes: Hoek et al. (1984: 45) note that the type of this species which is preserved at Trinity College, Dublin, is labelled with the following annotations in Harvey's handwriting: 'South Island, New Zealand. Cladophora lyallii n. sp.' and 'Nov.Zel.D. Lyall Cladophora lyallii' (the 'South Island' of Harvey is now Stewart I.). According to Boedeker et al. (2010: 530), D. Lyall collected the type and there are isolectotypes in BM.
