The type species (lectotype) of the genus Dicranema is Dicranema grevillei Sonder.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trematocarpus acicularis (J.Agardh) Kylin.

Adjective (Latin), acicular, i.e., narrow, stiff, pointed like a needle (Stearn 1973).
