The type species (holotype) of the genus Platythamnion is Platythamnion heteromorphum (J.Agardh) J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Pterothamnion plumula (J.Ellis) Nägeli

Type information
Type locality: Unlocalised, probably Sussex, England (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 26). Lectotype: Ellis’s original illustration (pl. XVIII: G) (epitype) (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 26). Notes: Dixon (1960) considered that the type was lost. Maggs & Hommersand (1993: 26) selected as lectotype Ellis’s illustration in pl. XVIII: fig. G.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), plumule (Stearn 1973).
