Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithophyllum dentatum f. gyrosum (Foslie) Foslie.
Type Information
Type locality: Roundstone Bay, Ireland; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 198) Lectotype: W.M'Calla; no date; none given; TRH; A24-1439 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 198) Notes: "Additional data — Woelkerling 1993: 112. Foslie (1900a: 32) subsequently treated gyrosa as a forma of L.
dentatum. Collection includes one fragment in one small box marked ‘Fuess 47’ (referring
to slide 47, made by Fuess & Co.) and fragments in a second small box marked ‘konc.?
[= conceptacles?]’. Annotation slip in latter box marked ‘Tømte Konc.? [= empty conceptacles?]’.
Grouped with A24-1440, two M’Calla collections of L. dentatum (A24-1417,
A24-1418), and two M’Calla collections of L. dentatum f. macallana (A24-1442, A24-
1443) under one entry in Adey & Lebednik 1967: 45, who mistakenly list ‘1899’ as the collection
date rather than the communication date. Adey & Lebednik (1967: 45) also indicated
that 7 Roundstone boxes of M’Calla material occurred, but only 6 have been
found]" (Woelkering et al. 2005: 198).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), clustered, growing in bundles (Stearn 1973).
