The type species (holotype) of the genus Pliocaenicus is Pliocaenicus hercynicus Round & Håkansson.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lindavia tanimurae (H.Tanaka & Saito-Kato) Nakov, Guillory, Julius, Theriot & Alverson.

Type locality: Fudenzaki, Aguni Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan (26°34.5'N, 127°13'E); (Tanaka & Saito-Kato 2011: 156) Holotype: Hiroyuki Tanaka; 7 July 2009; muddy tuff of the Fudenzaki Formation; Micropaleontology Collection, National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo; MPC-04891 (type material AGU-107) (Tanaka & Saito-Kato 2011: 156) Notes: Isotype: TA-3471 (Maebashi Diatom Institute, Maebashi , Japan).
