The supposed basionym, Alcyonium bursa Linnaeus, is the basionym for a sponge, Weberella bursa (L.) (M. Spencer-Jones in Spencer, Irvine & Jarvis (2009: 239). According to P.C. Silva (INA) "...traditionally cited as basionym of Codium bursa, but invalid in botanical nomenclature: [Linnaeus] cites "Ellis corall. 82. n. 1. t. 17. f. B, C, D.
