This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Polycavernosa.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria edulis (S.G.Gmelin) P.C.Silva.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
