The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata tripinnata (Harvey) Kuntze

Type locality: In mari Adriatico ad Tergestum (Trieste, Italy) (Agardh 1842: 142). Lectotype (tetrasporangial): Biasoletto; LD sheet number 40938 of J. Agardh's herbarium (Diaz-Tapia et al. 2013: 152, fig. 1).
