Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gambierdiscus is Gambierdiscus toxicus R.Adachi & Y.Fukuyo.

Type Information
Type locality: "Lagoonal habitat, Rarotonga, Cook Islands"; (Smith & al. 2016: 49) Notes: "HOLOTYPE: Fig. 2E; SEM stub 375 (isolate CAWD232) is held at Cawthron Institute, Nelson, New Zealand. The isolate was obtained
from western Rarotonga, Cook Islands in 2014. Living cultures of G. cheloniae (CAWD232 and 236) are maintained in the CICCM. ISOTYPES: Fig. 2A–D and F–H, stubs 375 and 307 (CAWD232) and stub 511 (CAWD236), held at Cawthron Institute."
