The type species (holotype) of the genus Chroococcus is Chroococcus rufescens (Kützing) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chroococcus limneticus var. carneus (Chodat) Lemmermann.

Syntype localities: "Je l'ai retrouvée au lac de Joux, du Bourget, d'Aiguebelette, de Paladru, de Bienne, de Morat et de Vrarese."; (Chodat 1898: 180)
