The type species (lectotype) of the genus Rhodoglossum is Rhodoglossum lanceolatum (Harvey) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mazzaella parva (G.M.Smith & Hollenberg) Hughey, P.C.Silva & Hommersand.

Holotype locality: Cypress Point, Monterey, California, U.S.A.; (Smith & Hollenberg 1943: 216) Holotype: G.M. Smith, No. 40-178; Growing at mean low tide level on rocks; UC; DS 306402 (Smith & Hollenberg 1943: 216 ) Notes: Holotype: DS 306402 in UC (Hughey et al. 2001: 1104).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), little, small, puny (Stearn 1973).
